about

The sinking dread on Ex Pontoon's 'What Does Not Kill You Makes You Sick' is buoyed by low-slung rhythms taking cues from busted shades of dub, house, dancehall, techno, post-punk, and all things DIY. The linear arrangements are shaped into songs by a dazed, murky baritone that is more detached than melancholy, spoken as much as it is sung, slyly hooky yet mostly too elliptical to pass for pop.

A narcotic interpretation of two house classics (Basement Jaxx's "Rendez Vu" and Kurt Harman Project's "Comin' Back"), the opener "Coming Back" is a slow minimalist dub-rock dirge that staggers across the finish line with the push of a metronomic drum machine poked at by understated, melodic basslines and sparse guitar chords. The barely two-chord trance of "Pump Hypnosis III", distills the anxiety of being disconnected with the icy repetition of a budget Shinichi Atobe or Actress. "I've Got Two Eyes" meshes almost baroque AM dial radio pop with a modern dubby/dancehall undercurrent, while the downbeat closer "Only Way" tangles jittery 606 drum patterns with lonely atmospheres.
